Serene Solitude

A million shades of green. Even in the water. Mesmerised, I stare into its depths. Observing the stream that doesn't seem to ever end. No matter how long I stand there. There's always more water coming and more water going. In a hypnotic rythm it carves its way through stones. Unstoppable. A vortex of azure, turquoise, cerulean, a touch of emerald even. If I just look hard enough. As I lean over the railing, my lips start forming a smile. A rather wide one.

The joy is palpable.

After a few eternities blissfully trapped in the magnetic spell of aquatic motion I manage to tear myself away from the falls. There's so much more to see, after all.

The warm embrace of Western Hemlocks, Red Cedars and Bigleaf Maple trees drown out the sounds of the falls as if to welcome me into a world of serene solitude where only hushed tones are allowed. I listen. Leaves rustling in the wind. Birds singing somewhere out of sight.

Beautiful silence.

Eternally torn between staying and going I eventually make my way up those winding steps. Guided by trees. Standing so certain. Surrounded by fallen comrades. A comforting blanket of moss decorates them. The climb is steep. My limbs grow weary, though I must press on. I just know there must be more alluring scenes to behold. The trail kindly accommodates my desires by never ending.

Could I just stay here for ever? The thought peeks around the corner of my mind with a cheeky grin. Is going back strictly necessary? Those blankets of moss look awfully cosy.

The sun begins its descend, casting golden rays of brilliance wherever the trees are not in its path. Yes.. yes.. I understand. My time here has come to a close. What an undeniable gift to have been granted. To wander amidst nature's splendor. Never have I felt more gratitude.

Parting ways induces sorrow, but I comfort myself with the knowledge that joy will outlive it. One last glance and I'll depart.

It's been an honour.
