You Are Your Own Fairy Tale by Amanda Lovelace

I am a gigantic fairy tale enthusiast. I love everything about them. The settings (often the woods or some other nature affiliated location or a grand kingdom that's far away enough that you can imagine it just might exist). The characters (and their memorable, iconic names and appearances). The illustrations. The insanely beautiful covers they often come with. The multilayered lessons. The worlds filled with magic and symbolism. Some may be more relatable and timeless than others, but they leave an impression on you. 'You are Your Own Fairy Tale' by Amanda Lovelace accomplishes exactly that.

This book is a poetry trilogy. It combines three of the author's earlier works:

break your glass slippers

shine your icy crown

unlock your storybook heart

This book reads like a love letter to the reader. It makes you feel as though the book is your friend. It's reassuring, comforting and unapologetic. Making sure you feel seen and heard and validated. Not that we need outside validation, that can only ever truly come from within. However, it sure is a nice feeling to know that someone else understands you. You're not alone in feeling/thinking/being the way you are.

The poems deal with several difficult, sometimes heavy topics. Not every poem resonated with me, but there's no need for that to be so. In fact I kind of loved that it didn't, because that meant this work could speak to so many different people. We are all unique and we do not all handle the same situation in the same manner. Everyone can take away what they need from this collection.

I especially appreciated the overall message to never forget the importance of being your own true love. Something I've always thought most significant in life. Princes and princesses and knights are all lovely, but at the end of the day, you're the only one who has to live with you 24/7. No one enjoys living with someone who puts them down all the time. So be kind and caring towards yourself. It's what you deserve.

you are never directionless.

- the universe is always guiding you.
